War on Gaza: Meanwhile, Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 55,362 people and wounded 128,741, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, and more than 200 were taken captive.

Middle East 2025.05.17 | Situation Tension

1. Introduction / Background 

The current situation in Gaza remains dire amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas since October 7, 2023. 

Since mid-May 2025, the Gaza war has seen a significant escalation in Israeli military operations against Hamas, marked by intense airstrikes, ground invasions, and heavy casualties. Israel has initiated a major new ground offensive, dubbed "Operation Gideon's Chariots," aiming to conquer and retain control over Gaza, dismantle Hamas's military and governance capabilities, and manage humanitarian aid distribution. Israeli troops have advanced into central Gaza areas like Deir al-Balah for the first time since the war began, accompanied by heavy artillery and air support.

INDIA-PAKISTAN TENSION - 18.05.2025 | SITUATION UPDATE

Situation is remained calmed and no any ceasefire violations by both parties were reported during the last 24 hours. However both India and Pakistan have initated post war propergonda campaign intending to gaing public and international support. Moreover, unsettled issues between Pakistan and India like Indu water treaty abeyance is viewed by international as a flashpoint for future conflict. Especially in a latest media interview  UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs  has urged all sides to abide by their treaty obligations.

INDIA-PAKISTAN TENSION - 17.05.2025 | SITUATION UPDATE

After India and Pakistan reached the ceasefire agreement on 10.05.2025, no Ceasefire violence was reported while the tense situation continued to de-escalate. However, India’s measures against Pakistan, especially diplomatic pressure and other actions, such as the abeyance of the Indo Water Treaty, indicate the potential for future escalation between both nations. Besides, emerging anti-Turkish sentiments among the Indian Public due to Turkey’s pro-Pakistan stance have contributed to disrupted trade and other relations between India and Turkey. Hence, the growing anti-Turkish sentiments in India could impact the relationship between Sri Lanka and Turkey.
