INDIA-PAKISTAN TENSION - 12.05.2025 | SITUATION UPDATE

Tension between India and Pakistan that erupted on 22 April 2025, following the Pahalgam terrorist attacks, the ceasefire agreement between the two immediate neighbors was fully implemented on 10.05.2025 with the intermediation of the USA. Although the shelling and missile attacks were not reported, both countries have accused each other of violating the agreement, claiming they have spotted flying objects like drones in their airspace. However, since last night, no attacks have been reported, and the situation seems to be returning to normal.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Situation normal in India’s border region, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan, with no reports of drones, firing, or shelling as reported by the Indian State on 12.05.2025 @ 0800 hrs.

1. GOVERNMENT'S RESPONSE

1.1. INDIA

a. The Gujarat government (India) has imposed a blackout in border districts, including Kutch, after several drones were spotted in the border districts. Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi confirmed this on Social media asked people not to panic.

b. Director General of Military Operations, (DGMO) of the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, said strikes across nine terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Jammu Kashmir under Operation Sindoor killed over 100 terrorists. Briefing media in New Delhi, the DGMO said they include high-value targets such as Yusuf Azhar, Abdul Malik Rauf and Mudasir Ahmed, who were involved in the hijack of IC814 and the Pulwama blast. He stated that Operation Sindoor was conceptualised with a clear military aim to punish the perpetrators and planners of terror and to destroy their terror infrastructure. 

1.2. PAKISTAN

a. Pakistani Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has announced to observe “Youm-e-Tashakkur” across the country on 11.05.2025 for giving a befitting response to Indian aggression and the success of "Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos".

  • In a statement issued in Islamabad, PM said the day will be observed for offering gratitude to Almighty Allah, paying tribute to the unmatched bravery of the Pakistan Armed Forces, and appreciating the unity and resilience of the Pakistani nation.
  • The PM said “Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos" delivered a strong and effective response to enemy’s aggression and Pakistan proved its superiority at all fronts. He said we are grateful to Allah Almighty for granting us success and honour.

b. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the victory secured by Pakistan in a stand-off with India is not only a success of the entire nation and armed forces of Pakistan, but a victory of principles and prestige.

  • Addressing the nation on 11.05.2025, Pakistan PM said "Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos”, was against hatred, prejudice, animosity towards humanity, aggression and religious fanaticism.
  • Pakistan PM said the nation and our armed forces proved that Pakistanis are a brave, self-possessing, and prudent nation. 

c. Pakistan has expressed its commitment to the faithful implementation of the ceasefire agreement with India, despite violations being reported by India in some areas, according to Pakistani State media on 11.05.2025.

2. IMPACT ON THE TRADE/TRAVEL AND ECONOMY

  • Delhi Airport (India) issues a travel advisory stating that operations at Delhi Airport are continuing smoothly.
  • Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) announced that the airspace has been fully restored for all types of flights and issued a fresh notice to airmen (NOTAM). Reportedly All airports in the country are available for normal flight operations, a spokesman for PAA said

3. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

a. Global leaders and international organizations have widely welcomed the ceasefire understanding between Pakistan and India.

  • US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire followed “a long night of talks mediated by the United States.” He congratulated both nations for using “common sense and great intelligence.”
  • U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance also played a key role in the diplomatic outreach, engaging with senior officials in Islamabad and New Delhi. The U.S. Secretary of State praised Prime Ministers Shehbaz Sharif and Narendra Modi for their “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
  • During his visit to Kyiv, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said British government was in engagement in ceasefire efforts over “some days.” Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who held talks with both countries, described the ceasefire as “hugely welcome,” emphasizing the need for it to be “enduring and lasting” and calling for sustained de-escalation in the region.
  • In a Social Media post on X, European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas called ceasefire a “vital step towards de-escalation.” In discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, she reaffirmed the EU’s support for peace, stability, and counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres termed the ceasefire a “positive step” and expressed hope that it would pave the way for resolution of long-standing disputes between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. UN Secretary-General Spokesperson reiterated the UN’s readiness to support efforts for peace and stability in the region.
  • In a post on X, Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the ceasefire understanding between Pakistan and India and urged both the nations to engage in “direct and healthy dialogue” and strengthen mechanisms to prevent future escalations. Earlier, Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan appealed for calm and offered strong support to Pakistan during the hostilities.
  • The Saudi Foreign Ministry expressed optimism that the ceasefire between Pakistan and India will help restore regional peace and security. It said Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar acknowledged Saudi Arabia's constructive role, along with Turkey and the United States, in facilitating the agreement.
  • Similarly, the G7 nations collectively called on India and Pakistan to pursue direct dialogue and maintain peace, reinforcing the broad international support for de-escalation.

b. US President Donald Trump has said he would work with Pakistan and India to see if a solution could be reached to the Kashmir dispute, just a day after his country mediated a ceasefire between the South Asian neighbours.

4. OTHER TENSIONS

  • The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for a series of coordinated attacks at 39 different locations across Balochistan, Pakistan. In a press release, the group announced that these operations are still ongoing, with multiple strategic objectives being pursued. According to Jeeyand Baloch, a spokesperson for the BLA, the attacks have targeted a range of sites, including police stations, military convoys, and infrastructure along major highways.
